From MIT President Susan Hockfield’s Letter to the Community:

Architecture professor Jan Wampler is designing a small, self-sufficient settlement consisting of a school and housing for 350 Haitian students and 100 staff. The settlement, conceived for a region about one hour from Port-au-Prince, will be carried out in coordination with local Haitian organizations, engineers and contractors, and can also serve as a model for use across Haiti.

Gerthy Lahens has been helping us with finding stakeholders in Haiti who will take ownership of the Fablab. Fablabs cannot just be plopped down and then take off: they require people more than machines to work. We are still looking for stakeholders who can take ownership, if you know someone, please contact us!

Computing Architectural Concepts

Can the dichotomy between obsessive tooling and strong design agenda be overcome? Can innovative software like Grasshopper be the ideal platform to marry computation, creativity and ecologic thinking? What can be done to accelerate the process?’
This lecture by Grasshopper developer David Rutten and some of his independent collaborators will engage with these questions, introducing the history and ideas behind this novel parametric modelling software as well as some of its experimental future plug-ins operating at the borderline of geometry, mathematics, physics and biology.
The lecture has been curated by Marco Poletto (Inter10 Unit Master) and is part of the Advanced Conceptual Design Workshop series held by ecoLogicStudio in London.

¡Increible!

Automated 3D modelling of real objects

3DSOM Pro is a powerful tool for creating professional quality 3D content from still images. A wide range of objects can be modelled including those with holes and 'difficult' organic shapes.

Using a conventional camera, photos of your object on a printed mat are taken from a number of viewpoints in front of a plain backdrop. The shape of the object is automatically extracted from each photo and this information is used to build a high quality 3D mesh.

What can you do with 3DSOM Pro models?

Incorporate into 3D scenes - export your models in standard formats for importing into your existing 3D scenes.
Publish to the web - output true 3D content in a number of web formats including our own scriptable Java format to make your web pages come alive.
Create animations, flythroughs and movies - Use industry tools to render 3D models as movies for DVDs, web streaming, exhibitions and marketing material.
